Dementia Care Matters

Dementia Care Matters is a leading UK organisation inspiring culture change in dementia care. We do this through five arms - Care Home Development, Learning Products and Resources, Tailored Consultancy and Training, Mattering in Hospital and University Recognised Learning in person centred care, leadership and training skills.

Historical Context

Following a career of 14 years in Health and Social Services - latterly as a General Manager : Old Age Psychiatry in one of the first UK joint NHS Trust and Social Services posts, David Sheard then established Dementia Care Matters in 1995.

For five years David Sheard based Dementia Care Matters in a new dementia care home - Merevale House, Atherstone where alongside Anne Fretwell, Owner / Manager they developed and implemented a new model of care.

Supported by the national Alzheimer's Society, working as its external Training Consultant for a ten year period up to 2010, this model of care was rolled out with them across the UK. Alzheimer's Society publishes Dementia Care Matters work in the Feelings Matter Most series of five books.

From 2010 and with Dementia Care Matters work being featured in the BBC series "Can Gerry Robinson fix Dementia Care Homes" our independent sector organisation grew significantly into five arms.
