Professional Background
Prior to setting up Dementia Care Matters in 1995 David had 15 years experience in Social Services and the NHS working in specialist practitioner/Senior Management posts providing services to older people with mental health needs and their carers. David had posts attached to the National Demonstration Centre in Care for Older People in Hull, and at the Professorial Unit, (Department of Health Care of the Elderly) University of Nottingham. Latterly he worked as General Manager, Old Age Psychiatry, in a joint NHS Trust/Social Services post.
Current Roles
Dementia Care Matters works in partnership with the European Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey where David is a Visiting Senior Fellow. David works currently as an external Training Consultant with the Alzheimer’s Society, National Office and is an Alzheimer’s Society Approved Trainer. David Sheard has for the last four years through the Alzheimer’s Society provided a 5 day Dementia Training Skills Workshop to develop dementia care training skills. David Sheard is a regular speaker at a range of Conferences across the UK/USA.

David Sheard co-edited the publication “Teams, Multi-disciplinary and Inter-professional Working and Dementia” DSDC University of Stirling 1996 and is editor of a new Dementia Care Training Manual ‘Make a difference in Dementia Care Training’ published by the Alzheimer’s Society April 2003. David has also co-authored ‘Building on Strengths’ a new strengths based Assessment and Care Planning tool and ‘Making Each Day Count’ a Day Care Manual – both published by the Alzheimer’s Society.
Residential/Service Development Background
David Sheard’s office – was based for three years in a residential care home which provided a range of specialist services for older and younger people with dementia and in 1998 in conjunction with the home manager of Merevale House he was a prize winner at the RSAS AgeCare/Alzheimer’s Disease Society National Dementia Care Training Awards.

With a background as a teacher and Training and Development Manager, Peter joined Dementia Care Matters in 2000. After 3 years working as Development Manager/Consultant, Peter is now
Deputy Director of Dementia Care Matters where he has developed a process to
merge best Change Management Practice. Peter specialises in Leadership and Change Management alongside implementing person centred care where he is course leader on a new National workshop course “Leadership Matters in Dementia Care”.

With a previous background in Training and Development in Social Services and previously working as Corporate Training and Development Advisor for Anchor Trust Beth originally conceived the idea for this Course/Manual in her working relationship as a Dementia Care Trainer with Quantum Care. Prior to joining Dementia Care Matters as an Associate Consultant/Trainer Beth worked up until 2001 as Training and Development Officer with the Oxford Dementia Centre. Beth has authored a Distance Learning Pack in conjunction with Oxfordshire Social Services Department entitled, “Working With Me’.
Trevor Adams – Biography

Dr Trevor Adams is a Lecturer in Mental Health at the European Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey where he is Mental Health Pathway Leader for the MSc Advanced Practice. He has worked within dementia care for over 25 years, initially as a practitioner in hospitals and as a Community Psychiatric Nurse. Since 1986 he has worked as a researcher and a teacher within dementia care. He is qualified in Dementia Care Mapping (Advanced). He has written over 50 papers and chapters in academic journals and books and has co-edited three books on dementia care. He is an Associate Editor of Dementia: the international journal of social research and practice, and an external examiner for the BSc (Hons) Dementia Studies, University of Bradford.

Following a period working as a ward sister in London, Anne Fretwell has been the owner/manager of Merevale House for the last 16 years. Merevale House has been involved in providing person centred dementia care since 1995 and in 1998 was a prize-winner at the RSAS/Alzheimer's Society Dementia Care National Training Awards. Merevale House specialises in providing small-scale domestic living for people with dementia.

Mark was formerly the Assistant Chief Architect of The Salvation Army prior to the unit transferring to become the Community Care team at SHCA. Mark worked alongside Patrick Spears on the elderly care scheme in Coventry. He has recently overseen two supported housing schemes for homeless people in London and a new extra care housing scheme for older people in Coventry. Mark also recently co-ordinated the consultant team for the SHCA bid for a new elderly care home at the Royal Hospital Chelsea where the SHCA team were finalists.
Mark has personal experience with dementia within his own family and is keen to continue providing the best possible environments for people with a dementia.

Patrick was formerly the Chief Architect of The Salvation Army prior to the unit transferring to become the Community Care team at SHCA. Patrick specialised in the development of the Salvation Army model for elderly care residential homes designing centres for older people for the organisation in Southend-on-Sea, Glasgow and Binley. Each development had a wing for people with a dementia. His first care home for older people at Southend-on-Sea won the inaugural annual Borough Councils Design Awards Scheme in 1994. The scheme at Binley was developed in consultation with Sense the organisation for the deaf blind and was featured in a leading industry journal as an exemplar project.
Patrick is currently responsible for a number of community care projects. He has recently completed the scheme design for a new extra care housing scheme adjacent to the elderly care home in Binley. He has recently worked on the delivery of detailed construction information for two large supported housing schemes. Patrick also provided the elderly care expertise in the bid to provide the new care home for Chelsea Pensioners where the SHCA were finalists.
